   What to do:Perfect time to enjoy the sunshine

  • Now that the monsoon has finally finished on the south and west coasts, Sri Lanka’s best beaches are back in action. December is the perfect time to swim, sunbathe and sip cocktails in the sunshine .
  • Thanks to all the rain that fell, the highlands are extremely hydrated. This means that places like Ella and Nuwara Eliya are exceptionally beautiful and verdant at this time of year.

   Weather:Monsoon has finally finished

Monsoon finally bid adieu to south and west coast. This part of Sri Lanka welcomes bright sunshine .

   Where to go:Back to the Beaches in the South and West

Galle, Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Mirissa, Negombo, Tangalle, Ella and Horton Plains.

   Where to avoid?Anywhere in the North and East of the island

The north and east parts of the island as they may still be affected by the final days of the northeastern monsoon.

   Wildlife:It's time to see wonderful migratory birds

If you want wildlife then make your way over to Sinharaja or to Bundala and Uda Walawe to catch a glimpse of their wonderful selection of migratory birds. There will also be blue whales in abundance off the coast of Mirissa.

   Hiking:Excellent opportunities for hiking and taking stunning photos

  • December presents excellent opportunities for hiking and taking photos of this stunning part of the country.
  • December also marks the start of the pilgrimage season to Adam’s Peak. While this means the hike will be a bit crowded, the atmosphere is so amazing it is worth going anyway.

The final poya of the year, Unduvap Poya is celebrated in honour of Sangamitta Theri bringing a sapling from the Sacred Bodhi Tree to Sri Lanka. Thousands of Buddhists will pay homage to the Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura on this day.
