Sri Lanka is best in March because…

32 °C (Mar. avg. temp.)

High Season

What to do:It's the best month of the year for sun & beach!

  • March is all about beach, beach and more beach! With the southern coast heating up to around 35°C, March is perfect for splashing in the sea and drying off in the sun.
  • There will also be quite a few blue whales off the coast of Kalpitiya in the northwest and Mirissa in the southwest. Whale-watching galore (despite Dec-Feb being the best time for whale watching in Mirissa).
  • Best places for sunbathing & swimming in March: Galle, Bentota, Negombo, Weligama, Mirissa, Tangalle, Kalpitiya.

Weather:Probably the best weather of the year (barely any rain)

When it comes to weather, March is probably the best month of the year. There is barely any rain across the island and the coastline is bathed in sunshine.

Where to go:Go Anywhere on the Island!

Some key places: Galle, Mirissa, Horton Plains, Bentota, Nuwara Eliya.

Where to avoid?Nowhere! It's good weather in the whole country!

Wildlife:Go to the smaller national parks to avoid the crowds

If you are looking for wildlife then some of the smaller parks are the best places to go in March. Sinharaja, Bundala and Horton Plains will be in full swing at this time with plenty of birds and animals lounging around in the sunshine in plain view.

Hiking:Enjoy the tea country and climb Adam's peak or Ella rock

Sri Lanka’s stunning tea country will be at its most beautiful in March. The air is cool but dry, providing sweet relief from the coast. This means you can enjoy everything without a raincoat! March is also a great time to climb Adam’s Peak.

Festivals & Events:Medin Full Moon Poya

Medin Full Moon Poya takes place on the day of the March full moon. The day is a celebration of Buddha revisiting his hometown, Kapilavastu, for the first time after achieving enlightenment. Festivities take place in and around Buddhist temples and are spectacular to behold.
